Furniture Care
To ensure that your furniture retains its natural beauty for longer proper care is important. Chinese furniture is made of wind dried wood, it is natural for the wood to react to changes in weather.
Wood furniture will react in response to changes in the atmosphere. Fluctuations in temperature, direct sunlight and dry heat may cause cracking, splitting, or warping if care is not taken. Through the manufacturing process wood is dried to make timber more stable. To prevent excessive drying which may increase splitting and cracking add a bowl of water under or on the piece of furniture ( a Vase of fresh flowers in water is ideal! however keep the water off the furniture) this will help maintain a consistent level of humidity that the furniture is used to.
The design of Chinese furniture has already cared for the expansion and contractions associated with wooden furniture, large surfaces will have a floating panel framed by wood on all sides to allow for movement (expansion and contraction)
The ideal conditions are a stable enviroment with humity at approximatley 40 to 70 percent and temperature comfortable for normal human habitation. Please aviod placing in direct sunlight, next to heaters, hot air vents, or airconditioners.
Do not place hot or cold items directly onto the surfaces of furniture, use coasters or mats.
Keeping the funiture free of dust and grime is important, dust often, we recommend using a soft dry cloth.
Once or twice a year polish your furniture with a good quality wax.
Do not use a polish or spray containing silicone as they leave a residual film which is difficult to remove.
Cleaning with a good quality wax or oil base polish is best. Do not use alcohol based cleaners as these can excellerate drying of the pieces.
